Experiencing the Hoi An Watercolor Painting Workshop: A Healing Morning in the Ancient Town

During this trip to Hoi An, I wanted to take things slow. Instead of rushing to take check-in photos at the Japanese Covered Bridge or along the Hoai River, I decided to try something a bit more artistic: a watercolor painting class!

  • Reviewing the $35 Hoi An Watercolor Class: Escaping the Ancient Town Heat & Painting My Way Out!

To someone whose drawing skills usually result in squiggly worms rather than actual trees, it sounded intimidating. But the real-life experience turned out to be wonderfully engaging.

The Journey Begins: Morning Vibes

At around 8:30 AM, the Hoi An Explorer vehicle picked me up directly from my homestay near the ancient town. I was handed a cool 0.5ml bottle of mineral water, and we headed straight to the workshop venue, arriving just before 9:00 AM.

Stepping inside, I was greeted with a warm cup of welcome tea. Inhaling the scent of fresh paper and paint immediately put my mind at ease—the perfect escape from the scorching midday heat outside.

Unleashing My Inner Artist

At 9:10 AM, the master artist introduced the fundamentals of watercolor painting, teaching us how to blend water and pigment so the colors flow artistically rather than looking muddy. All the tools—brushes, paints, and paper—were fully prepared by the tour, so I just had to show up with an open mind.

By 9:30 AM, when it was time to draw basic outlines, my hands were shaking a bit! Then came the hands-on practice at 10:00 AM. We learned how to sketch everyday items like a loaf of bread, glass bottles, and flowers. While the master’s strokes looked effortless and smooth, my vase looked slightly lopsided.

Luckily, the instructor walked around providing kind, hands-on guidance—telling me where to lighten the tones and where to add richer shades. Concentrating so deeply made me completely lose track of time, washing away all my daily worries.

The Critique & Wrap Up

At 10:30 AM, we held a mini showcase. The master reviewed each person’s work, offering encouraging feedback and highlighting our natural strengths rather than pointing out flaws. Looking at the painting I had poured a solid hour into, I felt a strange sense of pride—it might not look like a professional masterpiece, but it was created with genuine effort by a total art novice!

By 11:15 AM, everything was packed up, and the friendly driver picked me up to drop me right back at my hotel in time for lunch.
